" A Collision at Sea Can Ruin Your Whole Day" --Bulk carrier sinks off Singapore

A Malyaysian ship collided with Taiwanese container ship off Singapore and sinks as reported here. Twenty-tree of twenty-four crewmembers of the Malaysian ship are plucked from the water and the search goes on for #24.

It is often surprising to non-sailors how often big ships run into each other, especialy on clear days with good radar pictures...

Update: "Everrise Glory" was detained by the Australian Port Authority in January 2005 for deficiencies descried as: "Oil filtering equipment overboard discharge pipes heavily contaminated with oily sludge. Oil pollution prevention equipment defective." (source)

More info :
An MPA spokesman, Simon Ang, said that at 7:15 p.m. (1115 GMT), the missing crewman, a Filipino, had yet to be found.

Two of the Everise Glory sailors sustained unspecified injuries, while all the crew on board the Uni Concord were unharmed.

The MPA said traffic along the Singapore Strait was unaffected by the incident, although passing ships had been advised about the position of the Everise Glory and urged to navigate with caution.

It said it was still investigating the cause of the incident.

Ang said the Everise Glory was carrying more than 20,000 tons of marine salt, and that the accident had not caused any pollution problems.
