Commander Salama...Looking forward to this Midrats. Commander Salamander just posted on the Second Battle on Savo.
The ibiblio link you posted the other day is awesome! Thank you!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5438008.post-85501893164926561902011-08-12T09:23:54.723-04:002011-08-12T09:23:54.723-04:00Eliminating the "Surface Warfare eats it'...Eliminating the "Surface Warfare eats it's young" mentality that pervades much of the force and supplanting it with a focus on things the force has accomplished, such as Forest Sherman in the Guadalcanal campaign and the Inchon landings would be great way to start. Aviation has a much better approach to this than many of us have.
I often wonder how much impact grade creep in command has on this we have many ships that would have been Lt or Lcdr commands in the past that now are commands for Cdr and Capt. LCS is an excellent example, while the ships are, as the XO of one told me, often engaged in PR to promote the concept as much as anything else and thus under constant scrutiny, it would be a more appropriate command for a senior Lt or junior Lcdr than a Cdr.
The "Zero Defects" mentality appears to play a major role, as well, resulting in such situations as a fear of submitting CASREPTs and subsequent impacts on one's career (machinery pushed to the limits of maintanabilty by increased commitments and "cost savings", surrounded by salt water and in almost constant motion breaking, once in awhile, who knew?).
I would love to see the history and tactics of these battles taught in the various commissioning and professional development programs. I feel confident that we could make room for them by compressing and consolidating some of the social and political stuff that takes up time, now.Shadowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15388843890140644376noreply@blogger.com
